Got a great idea for a comic but not sure how to draw it? Or maybe you love drawing characters but are struggling to come up with a story? Then book a place on Making Comics for Beginners, a 10 week evening course starting this autumn at Heene Community Centre, Worthing!
This course is aimed at beginners who want to create their own comics but aren’t sure where to start, or for those who have some experience but want to improve their storytelling skills.
During this 10 week course you will:
Learn the storytelling techniques of comics, manga and graphic novels (and how to apply them).
Explore narrative structure, using simple techniques to develop your ideas and build a short story with pictures & words.
Improve upon your drawing skills and learn how to create compelling characters using just basic shapes.
Learn how to draw believable, immersive worlds for your readers to explore.
Create your own mini-comic, from script through to final artwork. We will also cover ways to promote your work.
Materials required: A4 or A3 sketchbook, pencils, drawing pens, eraser, sharpener, ruler (some basic materials can be provided by the tutor).

Tuesdays 6.30 - 8.30pm
10 weeks, from September 30th to December 2nd 2025 (runs through school half term)

About the tutor
My name’s Jaime and I’m a cartoonist and illustrator based in Worthing, West Sussex. I’ve illustrated comics on many subjects, ranging from Winston Churchill to the discovery of the iguanodon. I recently worked on the George Orwell adaptation Such, Such Were the Joys: A Graphic Novel with writer Sean Michael Wilson, which was published by Pluto Press and supported through Arts Council England.
I’m also an experienced tutor, having taught in further education since 2017. I currently teach drawing skills to Games Design students at Brighton Metropolitan College.
