Had to keep it secret for a while but I can finally announce that I won a runner up place in the Dundee Comics Prize! Yay! Got 250 big ones plus some cool D.C . Thomson goodies. I'm pretty chuffed. Apparently my entry will feature on the Dandy or Beano website sometime soon, I hope they don't mind me putting it up here first:
THE COLOUR OF C
Comica Festival - Comiket!
That's right - I've booked myself a mini stall at this year's Comica Comiket, a massive independent comics fair on Saturday the 12th November at the Bishopsgate Institute, London (near Liverpool Street station). Doors are from 11-6pm and its free to get in! Here's the official announcement from the Comica website:
"The spectacular Great Hall at the Bishopsgate Institute is the new venue for Comica Comiket, the Comica Festival’s 6th one-day comics and art fair - bigger and better than ever, offering the best of British creators, publishers, small presses, graphic artists and suppliers under one roof. Throughout the day, top artists will be taking part on stage in the Comica Drawing Parade, with their live artworks and demos projected on a giant screen."
There's going to be loads of great people there including some amazing guests (follow the link above)!
See you there!
Updates
Whoot! New comics page! And new mini project..
Rather than publishing my completed comics on here in dribs and drabs, I've decided to make a new 'Comics' page (click menu link above or go here). So now you can read both 'Hum-Man' and 'Elidyr and the Little Folk' in their entirety online! Plus I've also just started a small A6ish sized daily sketchbook project. I'm calling it the Biro Diaries for now and I will be publishing everything I do on this blog page. First examples below. The idea is anything goes but hopefully it'll also be a chance to do some more observational drawing as well as the usual aimless doodling. Enjoy!
Elidyr - Part II
Part 2 of my latest comic. Part 1 is here.
Elidyr
My latest comic, which I will publish here in three installments, based on a Welsh medieval folk story recounted by Gerald of Wales.
ALTERNATIVE PRESS FAIR LONDON THIS WEEKEND!!
Just a reminder that my friends Adam, Elly and I will be running the MAISD stall this Saturday, 28th May at Conway Hall in Holborn, London! We will be selling lots of amazing home grown comics, zines and prints so come and check it out! We would be over the freakin' moon to see you there. Things kick off at 10am and it costs a measly £2 to get in. In addition to the fair there's three rooms of workshops and talks including DIY Couture fashion, screen-printing workshops and a reading area with Zine Swap. Check out full details here. And find out how to get there here!
Looking forward to seeing you there!
Gerald's Wales (part 2)
A second piece for my proposed comic based on the writings of Gerald of Wales. The first piece is here.
Soothsayers
This is my first installment of a continuing series of strips based on the writings of Gerald of Wales. His account of a pilgrimage through 12th Century Wales is a cracking read, mainly because of the crazy stuff he writes about the Welsh people and their culture. I strongly recommend it for a giggle, especially if like me, you happen to be Welsh.
International Alternative Press Festival!
My friend Adam and I will be running a stall at this event on Saturday the 28th of May! Brighton Zinefest this weekend!!
I will selling some of my stuff tomorrow at the Brighton Zinefest on the MAISD stall, including a new piece featuring the chap below. Entitled Zinezilla, it's a piece made especially for the show together with my pal, Kieron Cropper. There'll also be lots of other great things for sale made by my buddies on the Sequential Design and Illustration MA. Come down! We'll be there from 11 until 6pm.
Hum-Man for sale!
Yup, that's right folks...my first feature length comic is now available to buy from lmnop shop on Montpelier Place in Brighton! It comes in a mini comic format (stapled paperback, approx A5) and should set you back a measly £4.The book isn't on lmnop's online shop unfortunately (this might change?) so you might have to brave the cold and buy a copy the good ol' analogue way (ie. use your legs).
You can see some sample pages of Hum-Man on the portfolio part of my website (check out the first 10 images, all featuring the chap above).
Hum-Man is the tale of one man's struggle against the dark side of his psyche, which manifests itself in shape of everyday household dirt. He uses his beloved vacuum cleaner to fight this rising tide of 'dust' only to find that the more he struggles the worse it gets.....to the point where it threatens to literally swallow him up.
Get your copy now!
..or get someone else to get you one for Christmas.
EXHIBITION TIME!!!
Hello and welcome to my new spangly website. Sorry about the lack of updates recently - been busy working for my final MA exhibition! Private view is at 5.30pm this Friday if you're in town. Come and check out my first 32 page wonder and marvel at the other work on display - there's a lot of good stuff to see! As for the website, there'll be a portfolio going up in the next few days and I'll be tweaking bits and bobs over the coming weeks. Riveting.
Well I think so anyway.
Rock on.
